SUMMARY:22 April 2026 Professor Bryn Baxendale ‘Learning New Skills from the practice of Medicine to the business of brewing’
DESCRIPTION:Professor Bryn Baxendale MBChB FRCA FAcadMedEd \nOwner\, Brewer and Bottle Washer \nGasman Brews Ltd \nHuman Factors Advisor and Lead for Safer Surgery and Invasive Procedures \nFormerly Consultant Anaesthetist and Honorary Professor\, Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust \nBryn was a Consultant Anaesthetist at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust (NUH) for 25 years. In 2004 he led the launch of the Trent Simulation & Clinical Skills Centre and was Director of this regional facility until 2023\, which focused on developing expertise in the use of simulation to enhance professional training and patient safety in healthcare. Between 2020-2025 Bryn held a national role with NHS England (NHSE) as an advisor on the strategic implementation\, quality assurance and evaluation of simulation-based and immersive learning technologies within health and care. \nHe is an Honorary Professor of Clinical Simulation at the School of Psychology at the University of Nottingham and is the Clinical Lead for the MSc in Quality and Patient Safety Improvement within the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences. Bryn retired from clinical work in April 2024 and currently works with the Trust Quality and Patient Safety Team one day / week as a Human Factors Advisor and Lead for Safer Surgery and Invasive Procedures. In this role he is pursuing implementation of methods that help teams and clinical services demonstrate effective organisational learning and resilience in day-to-day work\, whilst also responding to resource constraints and wider changes in care delivery. \nSince semi-retirement Bryn has set up a small commercial nanobrewery (www.gasmanbrews.com)  located in an outbuilding at home and is pursuing an ambition to become a certified beer sommelier as well as host beer tasting and food pairing events. DESCRIPTION:Dr Gerry Dolan\n‘Haemophilia – From Darkness into Light’ \nDr Gerry Dolan MBChB\, FRCP\, FRCPath\, Consultant Haematologist\, Haemophilia Centre Director at St Thomas’ Comprehensive Care Centre\, London\, UK and lead for the South London Haemophilia Network. \nPrior to his current position\, he was Consultant Haematologist at Nottingham University Hospitals and lead for non-malignant haematology from 1991 -2015. \nAfter receiving his medical degree from Glasgow University Medical School\, Glasgow\, UK\, Dr Dolan held training posts in internal medicine and haematology in Glasgow\, Edinburgh and Sheffield\, UK. \nHis research interests include the molecular aspects of inherited bleeding disorders\, gene therapy and outcome measures of haemophilia care. DESCRIPTION:Dr Norman McConachie\nTony Mitchell Memorial Lecture\n‘Advances in endovascular management of neurovascular disease’\n\n\nDr Norman McConachie MBChB FRCR \nConsultant Interventional Neuroradiologist\, Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust \nDr. Norman McConachie is President of the British Society of Neuroradiologists\, the immediate past Chair of the United Kingdom Neurointerventional Group and an examiner for the Intercollegiate Specialty Examination Board in Neurosurgery. \nHe is the author of several book chapters and numerous scientific papers concerning craniofacial trauma\, imaging of brain tumours\, intracranial haemorrhage\, embolisation of aneurysms\, mechanical thrombectomy for acute stroke and non-accidental injury in children. Dr McConachie is instructed to act as an expert witness in personal injury and clinical negligence cases in the areas of head and spinal injury\, birth-related injury/cerebral palsy\, interventional neuroradiology and diagnostic MRI of the brain and spine. DESCRIPTION:Join us for our trip to the University of Nottingham held at Kings Meadow Campus\, University of Nottingham\, Kings Meadow\, Lenton Ln.\, Nottingham NG7 2NR\, from 10:30 to 12 pm. \nThis time we shall be seeing the digitalisation process as well as seeing the store and handling the fabulous books – some books going back to the 1500’s. DESCRIPTION:We welcome Dr Jamie Back (trainee anaesthetist) and Dr Elizabeth Mumby (GP trainee) to tell of their experiences working and training in NZ and trying to navigate a way back into the doctor depleted NHS – not as easy as it sounds \nDr Jamie Back  and Dr Elizabeth Mumby qualified from St George’s and Southampton respectively and are both currently working in Cornwall. In August 2024 they returned to the UK having worked and trained for nearly 4 years in New Zealand – in anaesthetics\, ICU\, and on the rescue helicopter. \nWhen not travelling\, they both love surfing\, trail running\, skiing\, hiking and tennis. They are getting married in September at Elizabeth’s family home in Newark. \nPlease join us on May 2025 (date TBC) at the PGMEC\, City Hospital Campus (free parking at the rear of the Centre) or via Teams. DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a MedChi visit to the University Archives.\n\nWe will enjoy an introductory talk on the archives and the MedChi historical collection of books\n\nWe plan to see some of the ancient books – some going back to the 16th century. We can handle them and they are truly amazing in the size (some are very big)\, the language used\, illustrations and medical practice at the time etc.\n\nWe plan to see the Conservator in action – they will be checking for damage\, infestations\, recording digitally etc.\n\nWe plan to see all the University of Nottingham Archives/ Manuscripts and Special Collections which are stored in a vast room which is air temperature and humidity controlled. Wine and Nibbles available from 18:30 with the talk starting at 19:00 \nDr David Selwyn Director of the Centre for Perioperative Care (CPOC)\, Acting Chief Executive Officer of Sherwood Forest Hospitals Foundation Trust\, Consultant in Adult Critical Care Medicine and Anaesthesia \nDavid was appointed as the inaugural Director of the Centre for Perioperative Care (CPOC) in May 2019\, tasked with establishing and developing CPOC as a genuinely cross-organisational\, multidisciplinary initiative delivering perioperative care for true patient benefit. Over the past 5 years\, CPOC has been hosted and largely funded by the Royal College of Anaesthetists (RCoA) \nDuring his tenure as Director\, CPOC has established itself as the pre-eminent UK voice of perioperative care\, has driven perioperative standards of patient quality care\, embedded the patient voice at the centre of this transformational change and developed a cross-speciality\, cross profession perioperative care curriculum. CPOC has also created a global voice and presence whilst developing a series of high value professional partnerships \nPrior to becoming Director of CPOC\, David was the Chairman of the RCoA Clinical Directors’ Network\, a national network of medical leaders in anaesthesia\, intensive care\, and pain management.  He continues to sit on the College Council and is also a representative on major Royal College Boards and committees. David lectures locally\, regionally and nationally on perioperative care and also on medical leadership \nHe is currently the Acting Chief Executive Officer at Sherwood Forest Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and the Trust’s Chief Clinical Information Officer (CCIO)\, Caldicott Guardian and Digital Lead \nPrior to joining Sherwood Forest Hospitals in 2019\, David was the Deputy Medical Director at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust \nHis clinical background is anaesthesia\, perioperative care and adult critical care and before embarking on his leadership journey\, David was a Regional Advisor for 8 years\, an inaugural Intensive Care Medicine Training Programme Director and a Faculty Tutor \n\nFor further details please contact admin@medchi.org.uk

DESCRIPTION:Please join us on the 12th February for our next meeting where we welcome Professor Kamila Hawthorne\, Chair RCGP\n\nLecture Theatre PGMEC\, City Hospital Campus\, NUH NHS Trust\, 7pm. Welcome drinks and nibbles from 6:30\nThis is  joint meeting with RCGP VOT Faculty.\n  \nProfessor Kamila Hawthorne MBE MD FRCGP FRCP FAcadMed FLSW DRCOG DCH(Lond) DFFP PG Cert Med Ed \n\nKamila has been a GP for 35 years\, with 28 of them spent working in South Wales. She qualified from Somerville College\, Oxford\, in 1984\, and completed her GP training in Nottingham in 1988. Kamila is currently Chair of RCGP Council\, having taken up office in November 2022. She was Head of the Graduate Entry Medicine Programme at Swansea University and is on the Trustee Boards of the Kings Fund\, the Academy of Royal Medical Colleges and the Moondance Cancer Initiative. She is also a Bevan Commissioner and a Fellow of the Learned Society of Wales.  \nKamila has a deep interest in medical education\, and believes that we should be training excellent\, caring and inclusive clinicians\, for a global society. She is passionate about the role of GPs in patient care and as advocates for patients.  \nHer research and clinical working interests have been in health inequalities and access to health services\, (her MD was based on working with BAME patient groups with Type 2 diabetes in Nottingham\, Manchester and Cardiff).
