‘Imagine That!’
Dr Jane Selwyn MBBS MRCP FRCGP DFSRH
The start of the year’s activities for the Nottingham Medico Chirurgical Society begins with a talk from the President of the Society Dr Jane Selwyn on Wednesday 2nd of October
Jane grew up in Nottingham, the daughter of Peter Selwyn FDS, Consultant Oral and Maxillo-facial Surgeon, was educated at Nottingham Girls High School and read humanities at A level. She qualified in 1982 from St Bartholomew’s Hospital Medical School, London, was awarded MRCP in 1986 and MRCGP in 1989. She worked briefly as a GP in Australia before being appointed a partner at The Fountain Medical Centre in Newark, a semi-rural, GMS, teaching practice of 14,000
Throughout her General Practice career Jane enjoyed teaching and mentoring – practice nurses, GP tutor for Medical School undergraduates, Clinical Supervisor for F2s, designated medical practitioner for non-medical prescribing – had a particular interest in women and children’s health, fitted coils and implants and undertook minor surgery. She was the Practice QOF, Respiratory, Nurses and Safeguarding Lead. In 2013 she was honoured to receive the ‘Patient’s Champion Award’ at the Centenary Nottinghamshire LMC Excellence in General Practice Awards
Her additional roles included Clinical Assistantships in Cardiology and GU Medicine at Nottingham City Hospital, Medical Director of Newark GP OOH Co-Operative and Medical Officer of a food factory in Newark. She was Newark and Sherwood CCG GP Governing Body Member and Mid Notts Clinical Lead for Children and Young People, Maternity and Neonates and for Safeguarding (Named Doctor) sitting on the CYP Mental Health Transformation Board, the Children’s Clinical Network, The Children’s Trust Board and the Local Maternity and Neonatal System (LMNS) Board
In October 2018, at the age of 60, she retired from General Practice having been a full time Partner for 27 years, the last 8 of which were as Senior Partner
In December 2020 she returned to active clinical work as a GP Medical Lead in the Nottingham and Nottinghamshire Covid-19 Vaccination Programme under Emergency Registered Practitioner (ERP) status. In 2021 she was runner up ‘Doctor/Consultant of the Year’ at SFHT annual Excellence Awards. Thereafter she was appointed Clinical Director of the Nottingham and Nottinghamshire Covid-19 Vaccination Service, a position she held until she retired for good in March 2024 when, the Pandemic declared well and truly over and ERP status subsequently withdrawn, she considered her job to be done
She remains an active member of the RCGP Vale of Trent Faculty having served as Honorary Secretary for 3 years and now as their national Late Career and Retired Member (LCARM) representative and deputy representative on Council. She was awarded Fellowship of the RCGP in June. She is Safeguarding Governor of a local primary school, Trustee of Newark Community First Aid and Secretary of her village PCC
Jane is extremely proud of her 3 children, one of whom, she is delighted to report, has been brave enough to follow in her footsteps

Dr Gail Allsopp
‘From Nottingham to Whitehall’
Dr Gail Allsopp MBChB MRCS FRCGP MSc, Chief Medical Advisor to the Department of Work and Pensions and nationally elected Council member at the RCGP
Gail was born and raised in Nottingham. She trained at Birmingham University and initially trained in Surgery before returning to the East Midlands to work as a GP. She was appointed as Chief Medical Advisor to the Department for Work and Pensions in September 2023, where she leads the Clinical Policy team, working closely with colleagues in the Department of Health and Social Care (through the Joint Work and Health Unit)
Her portfolio career covered academia at the University of Nottingham, Clinical Policy at the Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP) and medical leadership; including roles such as the Chief Medical Officer for the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE)
Alongside her clinical policy work Gail has just completed her NIHR funded research on Long Covid and is a nationally elected Council member at the RCGP

Dr. Rineke Schram
‘Doctors Needing Support’
We welcome our Guest Speaker Dr. Rineke Schram, Lead Assessment and Remediation Advisor, NHS Resolution, on Wednesday the 20nd November, 7pm @ PGMEC
Catharina (known as Rineke) Schram was born in the Netherlands and moved to the UK in 1984
Rineke worked in the NHS as a Consultant Obstetrician in East Lancashire for nearly 25 years, in many roles. Aside from her clinical expertise, she has years of experience as a Medical Director, and experience as Director of Medical Education, Royal College Revalidation Lead, Responsible Officer and external peer reviewer. Rineke has been the lead Obstetrician for the Lancashire and South Cumbria Local Maternity System (LMS) since its inception in 2017, and is the Clinical Lead for the NorthWest Coast Clinical Network
Since August 2020 she has been working for the Practitioner Performance Advice service at NHS Resolution as the Lead Adviser Assessment and Remediation Advisor (LARA), as well as continuing her role with the Clinical Network and LMS. As LARA she is keen to support individual practitioners and teams to provide the high quality services to patients and families that we as professionals aspire to
Outside of work interests she is an enthusiastic gardener and, more recently, pianist of imperfect proficiency!

Professor Scarlett McNally
‘Exercise and valuing women doctors = how to fix the NHS’
Professor Scarlett McNally is the national President of the Medical Women’s Federation (May 2023 – 2025). You might have heard her voice on BBC Radio 4 recently when she joined Drs Chris and Xand Van Tulleken for a programme called ‘The Miracle Cure’ about the benefits of exercise. Scarlett is the lead author of ‘Exercise the Miracle Cure’ from the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges in 2015
She is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon in Eastbourne (since 2002) and Honorary Clinical Professor at Brighton & Sussex Medical School. She is also Deputy Director of the Centre for Perioperative Care (CPOC, aimed at revolutionising care around operations https://www.cpoc.org.uk/)
She was an elected Council member of the Royal College of Surgeons of England (2011-21), the ninth woman ever. She has written extensively on careers, diversity, bullying, sustainability, active travel, perioperative care & health and is frequently described as an ‘inspirational’ speaker. Cycle campaigner, electric-cycle owner, mother of four adult children, 4th Dan Karate black belt, she lives with myeloma and cardiac amyloidosis

Professor John Beckett
‘Jesse & Florence Boot, Philanthropy and Evolution of Nottingham University and Medical School’
We welcome a local academic historian to address our meeting on 15th January 2025
Professor John Beckett, Professor of Regional History, University of Nottingham, author of the definitive history of the university, will explain the link between Boots and the Medical School
Jesse and Florence Boot, of the pharmaceutical company still prominent on our High Streets, provided much of the funding (cash and land) which underpinned the University Buildings on the University Park estate today
Many doctors have university teaching contracts for Medical Students, who are our future medical cohort, so this is a very relevant topic to us all. We shall be inviting some members who held senior medical school positions to contribute to the discussion after the talk

Professor Kamila Hawthorne MBE
Mitchell Memorial Lecture
‘Talking the talk and walking the walk – how difficult will it be for the Government to deliver its promises to General Practice?‘
Professor Kamila Hawthorne MBE MD FRCGP FRCP FAcadMed FLSW DRCOG DCH(Lond) DFFP PG Cert Med Ed
Kamila has been a GP for 35 years, with 28 of them spent working in South Wales. She qualified from Somerville College, Oxford, in 1984, and completed her GP training in Nottingham in 1988. Kamila is currently Chair of RCGP Council, having taken up office in November 2022. She was Head of the Graduate Entry Medicine Programme at Swansea University and is on the Trustee Boards of the Kings Fund, the Academy of Royal Medical Colleges and the Moondance Cancer Initiative. She is also a Bevan Commissioner and a Fellow of the Learned Society of Wales
Kamila has a deep interest in medical education, and believes that we should be training excellent, caring and inclusive clinicians, for a global society. She is passionate about the role of GPs in patient care and as advocates for patients
Her research and clinical working interests have been in health inequalities and access to health services, (her MD was based on working with BAME patient groups with Type 2 diabetes in Nottingham, Manchester and Cardiff). With wide experience of general practice and running community projects in diabetes and heart disease, she has been named ‘GP of the Year’ twice and was awarded an MBE in 2017 for services to General Practice

Dr David Selwyn
‘Perioperative Care, here and now or future state’
Dr David Selwyn, Director of the Centre for Perioperative Care (CPOC), Acting Chief Executive Officer of Sherwood Forest Hospitals Foundation Trust, Consultant in Adult Critical Care Medicine and Anaesthesia
David was appointed as the inaugural Director of the Centre for Perioperative Care (CPOC) in May 2019, tasked with establishing and developing CPOC as a genuinely cross-organisational, multidisciplinary initiative delivering perioperative care for true patient benefit. Over the past 5 years, CPOC has been hosted and largely funded by the Royal College of Anaesthetists (RCoA).
During his tenure as Director, CPOC has established itself as the pre-eminent UK voice of perioperative care, has driven perioperative standards of patient quality care, embedded the patient voice at the centre of this transformational change and developed a cross-speciality, cross profession perioperative care curriculum. CPOC has also created a global voice and presence whilst developing a series of high value professional partnerships
Prior to becoming Director of CPOC, David was the Chairman of the RCoA Clinical Directors’ Network, a national network of medical leaders in anaesthesia, intensive care, and pain management. He continues to sit on the College Council and is also a representative on major Royal College Boards and committees. David lectures locally, regionally and nationally on perioperative care and also on medical leadership
He is currently the Acting Chief Executive Officer at Sherwood Forest Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and the Trust’s Chief Clinical Information Officer (CCIO), Caldicott Guardian and Digital Lead
Prior to joining Sherwood Forest Hospitals in 2019, David was the Deputy Medical Director at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust
His clinical background is anaesthesia, perioperative care and adult critical care and before embarking on his leadership journey, David was a Regional Advisor for 8 years, an inaugural Intensive Care Medicine Training Programme Director and a Faculty Tutor

21 May 2025 -Dr Jamie Black and Dr Elizabeth Mumby ‘There and Back Again – a Kiwi Tale’
We welcome Dr Jamie Back (trainee anaesthetist) and Dr Elizabeth Mumby (GP trainee) to tell of their experiences working and training in NZ and trying to navigate a way back into the doctor depleted NHS – not as easy as it sounds
Dr Jamie Back and Dr Elizabeth Mumby qualified from St George’s and Southampton respectively and are both currently working in Cornwall. In August 2024 they returned to the UK having worked and trained for nearly 4 years in New Zealand – in anaesthetics, ICU, and on the rescue helicopter.
When not travelling, they both love surfing, trail running, skiing, hiking and tennis. They are getting married in September at Elizabeth’s family home in Newark.
