About us

The Nottingham Medico-Chirurgical Society is one of the oldest medical societies in the country, originating in1828 as a lending library for medical books. We still have access to a large historical collection of original medical books from the 16th to the 19th century stored in the University of Nottingham archives.

MedChi provided medical education for many years but latterly it has evolved to become a networking group for medics in the Nottinghamshire area.

There is a programme of evening lectures between September and June each year. Usually, they are held at the Post Graduate Education Centre at the City Hospital Campus in Nottingham on a Wednesday evening. Topics are varied, depending on the interests and expertise of the President who alternates on a yearly basis between Primary and Secondary Care.

The talks last about 45 minutes and some are medical but many are not. Light refreshments are available from 6.30pm preceding the talk at 7pm.

The MedChi Council room in the Postgraduate Centre includes photographs of all the Presidents over the years, and there is a book with biographies available ‘From Sawbones to Keyholes’ which we are in the process of updating.

An active social programme complements the evening talks.

A book club meets monthly in a restaurant and the discussions are lively!

Regular events include a Burns Night ceilidh, general knowledge quiz and charity golf day. We sometimes hold Saturday morning workshops at the City Hospital for example willow weaving, origami and glass fusion.

The President chooses a charity to support each year and there are awards for student elective study grants and travelling scholarships as well as several prizes.
