14 October 2026, Professor Tony Avery OBE Inaugural Presidential Address: ‘Are we prescribing too many medicines?’

Professor Tony Avery OBE, DM, FRCGP, FRCP, FBPS, FRCPharm, MFPH(Hon)
GP at the Valley Surgery Chilwell, Nottingham, Professor of Primary Health Care University of Nottingham, and National Clinical Director for Prescribing.
Tony graduated in medicine from University of Sheffield in 1986, and after house jobs he came to Nottingham to join the Nottingham Vocational Training Scheme for General Practice followed by the Nottingham Community Paediatrics Rotation. He took up an academic post at the University of Nottingham in 1992 alongside a part-time partnership at the Valley Surgery, Chilwell, Nottingham.
At the University of Nottingham, he was very actively involved in medical education in his early years, and his research has focused on prescribing and patient safety where he has led several studies that have had impact on national policies and clinical practice. Tony became a professor in 2002 and has held many leadership positions at the University including Head of the Division of General Practice/Primary Care (1998-2012), Deputy Head of the School of Community Health Sciences (2000-2008), Director of Research for the School of Medicine (2013-2015) and Dean and Head of the School of Medicine (2015-2019).
At the Valley Surgery, Tony has been the lead for prescribing and patient safety for most of his time at the practice. In 2024 he stepped down from being a partner and continues working clinically at the practice on the GP retainer scheme.
Tony took up the role of National Clinical Director for Prescribing for NHS England in 2022 and has provided clinical leadership for implementing recommendations from the 2021 National Overprescribing Review, alongside various other initiatives. He is currently providing clinical leadership for the development and implementation of a Single National Formulary for the NHS in England.
In 2022, Tony was awarded an OBE for services to general practice and has received several other accolades throughout his career including the John Fry Award (RCGP) in 2008, Tony Mitchell Memorial Medal in 2009, James MacKenzie Lecturer Silver Medal (RCGP) in 2016 and NIHR Senior Investigator Award 2018.
In his Presidential Address, Tony will draw upon his research, clinical practice and policy work to address the question ‘Are we prescribing too many medicines?’. He will highlight the vital, and increasing, role that medicines play in improving healthy life expectancy and treating symptoms, while also addressing the problem of overprescribing, particularly for mental health problems, chronic pain, and in older frail people. He will argue that getting the balance right is essential, and that involves listening to what is important to patients and taking account of guidance, but also using common sense when guidance is not always in the best interests of individual patients.

20 May 2026 Daniel Sokol ‘From Error to Ethics; essential lessons from teaching clinicians in trouble’

The Nottingham Medico-Chirurgical Society is delighted to welcome Daniel Sokol, barrister, medical ethicist, and long-standing BMJ columnist, for what promises to be a thought-provoking and highly relevant talk for today’s clinicians.
Drawing on years of experience teaching and advising doctors facing professional, ethical, and medico-legal challenges, Daniel will explore the recurring themes behind clinical difficulties, ethical decision-making, communication failures, professionalism, and reflective practice.
This lecture will be particularly valuable for:

Please join us for our annual Quiz on Wednesday 29th of April 2026.
Quizmaster David Bogod puts your general knowledge to the test in the quest for the Medchi Challenge. Enter as a team or individually to be allocated to a team.
Teams should be based on around 8 to 10 people (smaller numbers will be teamed up) and we also welcome anyone who doesn’t mind being put into a team
Seats are allocated on a first come, first served basis for THOSE WHO HAVE PAID – so please book early and no later than Friday 10 April 2026

22 April 2026, Professor Bryn Baxendale, ‘Learning New Skills from the practice of Medicine to the Business of Brewing’

Human Factors Advisor and Lead for Safer Surgery and Invasive Procedures
Formerly Consultant Anaesthetist and Honorary Professor, Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust
Bryn was a Consultant Anaesthetist at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust (NUH) for 25 years. In 2004 he led the launch of the Trent Simulation & Clinical Skills Centre and was Director of this regional facility until 2023, which focused on developing expertise in the use of simulation to enhance professional training and patient safety in healthcare. Between 2020-2025 Bryn held a national role with NHS England (NHSE) as an advisor on the strategic implementation, quality assurance and evaluation of simulation-based and immersive learning technologies within health and care.
He is an Honorary Professor of Clinical Simulation at the School of Psychology at the University of Nottingham and is the Clinical Lead for the MSc in Quality and Patient Safety Improvement within the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences. Bryn retired from clinical work in April 2024 and currently works with the Trust Quality and Patient Safety Team one day / week as a Human Factors Advisor and Lead for Safer Surgery and Invasive Procedures. In this role he is pursuing implementation of methods that help teams and clinical services demonstrate effective organisational learning and resilience in day-to-day work, whilst also responding to resource constraints and wider changes in care delivery.
Since semi-retirement Bryn has set up a small commercial nanobrewery (www.gasmanbrews.com) located in an outbuilding at home and is pursuing an ambition to become a certified beer sommelier as well as host beer tasting and food pairing events. This transition in careers will be the focus of this evenings Med Chi lecture.

18 March 2026 Dr Gerry Dolan ‘Haemophilia – From Darkness into Light’
Please join us Wednesday 18th of March at 7pm in the Lecture Theater PGMEC City Hospital Campus for a talk by Dr Gerry Dolan.
Dr Gerry Dolan MBChB, FRCP, FRCPath, Consultant Haematologist, Haemophilia Centre Director at St Thomas’ Comprehensive Care Centre, London, UK and lead for the South London Haemophilia Network.
His research interests include the molecular aspects of inherited bleeding disorders, gene therapy and outcome measures of haemophilia care. His main clinical interest is in the management of haemophilia in older adults.
Dr Dolan has held a number of professional posts including Chairman of the Age-related DeVelopments ANd CommorbiditEs in haemophilia (ADVANCE) working group, Clinical Lead for the NHS England Clinical Reference Group for Specialised Haematology, Chairman of the United Kingdom Haemophilia Centre Doctors’ Organisation (UKHCDO) and President of the British Society for Haemostasis and Thrombosis.

25 February 2026 Professor Jonathan Corne ‘How will we train the Doctors of the Future’
Please join us Wednesday 25th of February at 7pm in the Lecture Theater PGMEC City Hospital Campus for a talk by Professor Jonathan Corne MBChB PhD FRCP, Regional Postgraduate Dean for the Midlands
Join Meeting with Vale of Trent Faculty
Jonathan is the Regional Post Graduate Dean for the Midlands and local Dean for the East Midlands, a role in which he has overall responsibility for the delivery of postgraduate medical training in primary and secondary care in the East Midlands as well as postgraduate pharmacy and dentistry across the Midlands. .He is a respiratory physician by training having graduated from Cambridge and Kings College London and undertaking his respiratory training and research in Southampton followed by a year at Yale. Jonathan still works two sessions a week as a Respiratory Consultant at Nottingham University Hospitals.
Jonathan was previously a College Tutor, Educational Supervisor, Head of the East Midlands School of Medicine, Chair of the National Heads of Schools of Medicine Group, and interim Secondary Care Dean. He is also Lead Dean for a number of specialties, the Lead Dean for flexible training in England and the liaison dean for obstetrics for NHSE.
